One thing that Working Genius, the work assessment we’ve been talking about, has given me permission to do is pursue the 10x life that Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy talk about in 10x is Easier Than 2x, because it really helps me implement Who not How into my life. The main idea of the book is that 20% of what you do in a day produces the most impact in your life. The other 80% is stuff that just fills your time and doesn’t move you forward. When you use your Working Genius in that 20%, it creates the most impact and becomes the most fulfilling. That's when you look for WHO can help with the other 80%.
Over the next six months, I’m committed to going into and building that process by being intentional in how I invest my time. One of the first things I did was decide to consolidate my meetings by changing my weekly one-hour meetings to bi-weekly two-hour meetings. That was one of my first takeaways.
When I sat down with my coaching clients to let them know about the change, they said that was great! One said that it’s going to give us more time to work on the things we agreed to work on, rather than having to hurry into it and realize at the next week that we haven’t moved forward. Another said it makes you feel kind of defeated not having any progress from meeting to meeting, and that longer, more concentrated meetings would allow them more time to implement what we talk about.
They’ve all read Who not How, and all are in the process of not only identifying their working genius but the geniuses of all of their team members, so it’s clicking. Working Genius really helps you understand the concept of Who not How better than anything. They’re so interchangeable. It’s like turning a light on, that’s the only way to describe it.
The best part about learning your genius, is that it gives you permission not to do things that are not fulfilling you the way God intended (I’ll add the caveat that there are some things we HAVE to do that are in our areas of frustration, and that’s ok, just make sure you don’t live there). It also gives you insight into the reality that we all need one another.
We need to look for others who cover us with their God-given gifts. That’s what the body of Christ is all about and Working Genius gives the greatest example of that.
Who not How, and understanding Working Genius, are creating the ability for me to perpetuate a path toward excellence and create a 10x life. In the next post we'll talk about how teamwork is the key to that.
